Race Day Lessons Part 3

Hi, everybody, Cheryl Knowlton, coming at you with my next three in the series of lessons I have learned from running half marathons. At this Point I had done 12 about ready to run my 13th in 10 days. I’m excited to see what I learn from that one. My next idea, my next tip for you, number seven is allow yourself to be inspired by those around you. It never ceases to amaze me when I’m running a race that I see people who are significantly older than I am, significantly in less shape then I am in even though I’m really, really, hard on myself and very critical. Oh my gosh, I wish I’d look like that person. That is something that we definitely don’t wanna do either is compare ourselves and others. But that segment for another day.

Allow yourself to be inspired by those around you

Allow yourself to be inspired by those around you were doing amazing and wonderful things. One of my most profoundly fabulous experiences of my entire running career was the first time I did a 10 K at Disneyland. I was raising money for an amazing organization called Team Lemon and Alex’s Lemonade Stands, fighting childhood cancers. As I came around in Disneyland light before small world were about to go around the right side of small world into the back behind the gates, I came upon two gentlemen both of whom had lost both legs from the knees down. They were running in this race with that basically prosthetic legs.

I was so inspired by then I just had this flash and the motion come over me. I couldn’t help myself. “Way to go, you guys, you are so inspiring to me,” I said to them. One of them said to me, “this is so hard.” I said, “I know, but you’re doing a phenomenal job. Keep it up your more than half way. I believe in you. You can do this.” He ultimately wound up becoming a really good friend of mine, But that is a story for another day. I finished my race and got my meta. I found my family. We took pictures, had some fun and that was great.

A few minutes later I heard the most deafening roar. You would have thought that Bon Jovi had just stepped onto the stage behind me or some amazing band. I turned around to look at the great big prompter. Guess who was crossing the finish line.  The crowd was going crazy. It was those two guys. I was so proud of them. They shot of confetti cannons. Everyone was on their feet and going wild for them.

Be inspired and deeply truly moved by people who were doing things that you can’t or haven’t done or that you don’t even ever had the desire to do.  But celebrate the successes of others around you. It will change everything about your business.

Have a good playlist

Next up, is, for me and running, it’s all about the play list. Surround yourself with powerful music that can move you and inspire you. It will get you happy, energized and get you pumped up. That is such an important thing to me that that, too, has its own chapter in my book Burn the Hamster Wheel.

Fuel yourself

And number nine: fuel yourself you. An empty car cannot go very far without any fuel. You have to fuel yourself.  That is so true in real estate both metaphorically and as well as physically. You’ve gotta eat right.  You’ve got eat healthy food that is going to energize you. Stop eating the breakfast of champions in real estate, which is a pop tart and a rock star. Take all of that garbage food out of your life and fuel yourself with great food so you can go the distance.
