You are never going to feel like it

Hi, everybody. Cheryl Knowlton coming at you with your dynamite tip of the day. Today, I had a major epiphany, and I was just so excited about it that I really, really, wanted to share it with you. The amazing Mel Robbins, the highest-paid female speaker in the world, she has the most-watched Ted Talk that there is, as far as I’ve been told. That is a great Ted Talk that I highly recommend that you watch called Stop Screwing Yourself Over. Pardon my French. That is what it is called. In order for you to find it, you need to be able to type it in that way.

In that amazing video, she does two things. At the very end of the video, she, almost as an afterthought, comes up with this amazing concept called the five-second rule. If you’ve ever read that book… If you’ve never read that book, I should say, you need to read that book. It is a phenomenal book that ultimately could change your life. My daughters absolutely love it and swear by it.

You’re never going to feel like…

Basically, the premise is this. You’re never going to feel like it. We think about all the things that we need to do. For me, today, let’s take exercise as an example. I’ve no problem exercising. I have certain things that I like to do, but for some reason, I’ve become estranged from my treadmill. After preparing, and running, I’ve already done two half marathons this year, I’ve been doing other workout programs, including weightlifting, and I’ve been losing weight. But, I haven’t been running, because I don’t have a specific marathon that I’m training for or half marathon that I’m training for, because the one I was going to do I wound up having a conflict. There’s another lesson in that for another day. Today, I didn’t feel like doing it, but I had decided today I’m going to bike 2 1/2 miles and I’m going to run 3. I made that decision and that commitment to myself ahead of time, and I didn’t feel like it.

Guess what? The major takeaway number two from Mel Robbins’s amazing video, you are never going to feel like it. You’re never going to feel like exercising. You’re never going to feel like prospecting. You’re never going to feel like making those calls to your sphere of influence. All of the things that are going to give us the most monumental change in our lives, in our businesses, in our health, we never feel like doing them. Stop waiting for the moment when you’re going to feel like it. Turn on your favorite music and bang it out anyway. Get it done.

My muscles were kind of screaming

By the time I had hit 2 miles on my treadmill, 2 1/2 on the bike, I was genuinely hurting. My muscles were kind of screaming. I pause my treadmill, I turned on my favorite playlist, and I got down and reintroduced myself to something I like even less my great big blue foam roller. I rolled out my muscles, and there was crying involved. There’s no crying in baseball, but they’re definitely is in running. I rolled out my muscles, turned the playlist up louder, and I got back on the treadmill. I didn’t just walk fast, I ran that last mile. I absolutely crushed it. By that time, I did feel like it, and I was having so much fun, I did an extra quarter of a mile. There was some dancing afterward involved in the kitchen because I was so proud of myself. It was a major, major, breakthrough for me that I’ve experienced again and again. Sometimes, I kick myself, and I think, “I’ve learned this lesson already. I know this.”

The biggest problem we have is the big difference between what we know and what we do. I’ve heard this amazing quote, “To know and not to do is simply not to know.” Let’s put some of our awesome knowledge to use. Let’s stop waiting until we feel like it and just go handle those amazing things that you know you need to do in order to really move the needle in your life or in your business. That is your dynamite tip of the day.
