The Power of No

Cheryl Knowlton:             Hi, everybody. Back at you for episode three of this week’s segment on just say no. And today Clay is going to talk to us about the power of no.

Clay Johnson:                    You know, in the sales industry, we just want to say yes. Anything that the consumer, the buyer asks us to do, we just have this tendency to want to please and say yes. Because we want referrals, we want happy folks. But, both in business relationships and also interacting with the buyers or the sellers, sometimes they’re asking those things, and one of the best things I learned from By Referral Only back in the day was slow down. Take a deep breath. No.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Just like that.

Clay Johnson:                    Just to say no. And you know, it’s interesting how people respond to that. I’ve been able to use that a number of times over the years. Sometimes there’s no other way to say it. It’s just kind of like, I just say no. And then I’ll go on to say, and here’s why we can’t do it that way.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Because you’re so nice.

Clay Johnson:                    Yeah, but it’s just letting them know. I think that’s a very powerful thing because we want to say yes so often. Just, there are those times where we just need to say no.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Absolutely. So much that we could say on that, and we will say more about that. Come back for the next episode and you’ll hear the next segment.

Clay Johnson:                    Bye.
