Parking Lot Awareness

Hi, everybody, Cheryl Knowlton, coming at you with another safety tip for today.

Today I’m going to get very honest with you about something I had to learn as a new safety habit as a real estate professional. That is parking lot awareness.

I cannot tell you how many times I have driven either to my model home or to an open house I was hosting or even to the mall.  I was working as a model home agent, at the time.  I will pull into where I’m going to park.  In real estate we know that we should always park at the curb. But let’s say I did park at the curb.  That was great.  You can be in charge of getting out and not get blocked in.

You don’t know who is watching you

Here’s what I was doing wrong. I would take my purse and potentially my laptop or other valuables that I had in my car.  Right there in plain sight of everybody who might be watching, I would trot around to my trunk.  Put all my valuables into my trunk and close it.  Then, I would go into the model home.

That is NOT smart behavior.  You have no idea who is sitting anywhere watching exactly what you are doing. You need to pull over safely at another location.  Put all of your valuables, anything and everything you want to stow away in your trunk at that location, first. Then, pull up to your open house, model home, mall or restaurant where you will be.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had friends or family members have their cards broken into over the years.  At Christmas time they had a ton of bags in the back of their car just asking for trouble. So, don’t do that. Learn from my bad experience.

Fortunately, I never, on the job, had my car broken into.  I have had my vehicle broken into. It’s so horrible.  Things that I loved and valued were stolen. It’s hard to replace.  It’s just a great big pain going to the DMV.  Nobody wants or need that in your life.

So, pull over safely first.  Stow everything away in your trunk before you get to your destination.  Then go in and handle business.

I hope that you take these ideas.  Use them to explode your business and we’ll see you in the next episode.  Boom Baby!
