Mindset: Getting out of the comfort zone

Cheryl Knowlton:             Hi everybody. Cheryl Knowlton, Dynamite Productions coming at you with my favorite sidekick, Clay Johnson with Castle and Cooke mortgage. Today we’re going to be talking to you about mindset. And so a few weeks ago Clay said something about his trainer and I was like, “Tell me about your trainer.” Because I was getting ready for my 15th half marathon that was coming up in a few weeks. It’s now only two weeks away. And I was coming up on my big CSP ceremony. I wanted to look amazing. Too bad we hadn’t had that conversation like six months ago. But now that I am seeing Wes, who is Clay’s trainer, we have a lot more to talk about.

Clay Johnson:                    Yes, we do.

Cheryl Knowlton:             As if we had a shortage. And so we were talking about how hardcore he is and related to mindset.

Clay Johnson:                    It is because I think all of us get in these comfort zones.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Clay Johnson:                    And you look at it, going to the gym you see the same folks doing the same thing pretty much-

Cheryl Knowlton:             Doing it wrong.

Clay Johnson:                    Doing it wrong and doing it every day.

Cheryl Knowlton:             You’re like slow down and you form’s off.

Clay Johnson:                    Yes. And so … And we get that way mentally too.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Clay Johnson:                    In our business and our mindset. We just get into this routine. It’s kind of a comfort zone.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Clay Johnson:                    And if we really want to grow, we have to say, “All right, where am I at in this comfort zone and how do I grow?” And that always involves breaking out of that comfort zone, doing something that’s a little challenging.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Yeah.

Clay Johnson:                    A little uncomfortable.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Clay Johnson:                    Yes, that’s right. And that’s why I say if I ever find myself being too comfortable, I know I’m not pushing myself. So as you know with Wes, and you’ve probably seen this already, it’s constantly like evaluating how are you feeling? What are you doing? And then I work out a lot, but he’ll change my program. And having worked out for a long time, I’m sore for three days.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Yeah. No plateaus.

Clay Johnson:                    No plateaus. So it’s that muscle shock. In business, it’s the same thing. How do we have that in mind shock, that vision shock?

Cheryl Knowlton:             Oh, I like that mind shock. Write that down.

Clay Johnson:                    Because we have … Sometimes our vision gets blurred.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Clay Johnson:                    When our vision is clear, it becomes so much easier, I think to break out of those comfort zones.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Absolutely.

Clay Johnson:                    And do those hard things.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Yes.

Clay Johnson:                    And if we really want to get there, we can’t just keep doing the same things. We know we have to strive and do a little bit better to get us where that vision in our business and our personal lives, whatever it may be to help us reach that level.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Absolutely. I totally agree. So write that down. Mind shock. Figure out, do you need to do something different to break out of your comfort zone and get comfortable with being uncomfortable?

Clay Johnson:                    Absolutely.

Cheryl Knowlton:             So there’s your thought for today.

Clay Johnson:                    Till next time.
