How Professional is Your Voicemail?

Let’s have a brief but meaningful and very important chat about a couple of specific aspect of professionalism.  I could speak for 3 hours or even all day about professionalism but you don’t want to hear that right now. We’re going to talk about one thing at a time.  Right now, we’re going to talk about voicemail.

Your voicemail message just might be a blind ad

First of all, from a compliance stand point, you need to make certain that if you work for, let’s say, Century 21, that your voicemail does not say, “Hi, this is Cheryl with Century 21.”  I do not work for Century 21 Corporate and technically, that is what would be considered a blind ad, even though it’s not an ad.  That is out of compliance.

If you work for Century 21 Everest Realty Group you need to say the whole thing. If you work for ERA Brokers Consolidated you don’t say, “Hi, this is Cheryl with ERA.” You need to say the whole thing.  You need to identify which office you are with because its very important that we identify for the public exactly which brokerage we work for. That is what is the opposite of a blind ad.

A blind ad is where we keep our brokerage hidden and even by identifying the brand is not enough.  We need to identify, specifically, the office that we work for.  So, make sure you always do that.  That is number one.

Clear off old voice messages

Number two, you need to make sure that you clear off your voicemail absolutely, every single day.  And that is going to mean deleting a lot of the messages.  Make sure you take care of those so you’re not deleting important things.

But if someone calls you, and you are working so hard trying to get your phone to ring, that when it actually does, and it’s a potential client, you don’t want to send the message that you’re too busy for people by having a voicemail that’s full.  As a broker that made me insane when I tried to call my agents and their voicemail box was full.

So, remember, identify, specifically, who you are with on your outgoing voicemail message and clear it off so when people call you, they can actually get a hold of you.
