Character and Integrity

Cheryl Knowlton:             Hi everybody and welcome back to our final segment of week one of basically how to have integrity in real estate, which, yeah, we can do a lot of video segments on this. But Clay has a really, really amazing quote that I would love for him to share with you.

Clay Johnson:                    Well, I think the important thing is we feel different emotions at different times when we hear different things and I think at one point or another in all of our lives we’ve thought, this is who I am, this is what I stand for. One of my favorites was from Steven [inaudible 00:00:31] and it’s really impacted me, but he said, “Character is the ability to act out of decision long after the emotion of the decision is passed.” I think if we just make up our minds that, “Hey, I’m having integrity in all my business. Everything I do, I’m just going to act under integrity. That’s who I am. That’s what I do,” then it makes our decisions really easy because we’ve already made a determination in our mind, “I’m going to have character and I’m going to have integrity,” and it makes all the difference in the world.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Absolutely. It absolutely does. To make that decision ahead of time, not in the heat of the moment when you’re tempted, when you don’t have enough money to make the house payment, you’ve got a child that all of a sudden needs cancer care, and then all of a sudden we start, where’s the line? We’ve got to make the line solid, which is why I usually wear black and white when I’m teaching long contracts because there is a black and there is a white in most of what we do in real estate and lending.

Clay Johnson:                    Yeah. Sometimes I’ve heard people say, “Well, there’s legal and there’s ethical.” It’s kind of like, ah, you know? But I think when we just say, look, what’s right, what’s ethical, and what is legal also-

Cheryl Knowlton:             That is right.

Clay Johnson:                    … and we follow both of the boundaries in what we’re doing.

Cheryl Knowlton:             Absolutely.

Clay Johnson:                    Yeah.

Cheryl Knowlton:             All right, friends, that’s a wrap for our week one of our video series. We’d love to have you join us next week. We’re going to be talking to you about why should you get your buyer pre-approved. Fabulous discussion.

Clay Johnson:                    It’s a fun one. Yes.

Cheryl Knowlton:             It is. Especially in a hot market. We’ll see you next week.

Clay Johnson:                    Bye bye.
